Glossary
As a SEND school we may often use specialist language and shortened terms that you may be unaware of. This glossary is intended to explain some of the common words and acronyms used across the school
SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)
A term used to describe children and young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities that affect how they learn or access education.
EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan)
A legal document that sets out a child or young person’s special educational needs, the support they require and the outcomes they are working towards.
Local Authority (LA)
The council responsible for education and SEND services in the local area. For Reynalds Cross School, this is Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (Solihull Council).
Specialist Provision
Support, teaching or resources that are designed to meet specific needs, often tailored to individual pupils.
Annual Review
A yearly meeting to review a pupil’s EHCP, check progress and decide whether any changes are needed.
Transition
The process of moving between stages, settings or phases of education, for example moving classes, schools or into post-16 provision.
Post-16 / 14–19 Provision
Education or training for young people aged 16 and over, which may continue within a school setting.
Safeguarding
The actions taken by a school to protect pupils’ wellbeing and keep them safe from harm.
Inclusion
Ensuring pupils are supported to access learning, activities and school life in ways that meet their individual needs.
Makaton
A communication programme that uses signs, symbols and speech together to help people communicate.
PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)
A communication system that uses pictures to help individuals express needs, choices and ideas.
SALT (Speech and Language Therapy / Therapist)
Support that helps children and young people develop communication, understanding and speech skills.
OT (Occupational Therapy / Therapist)
Support that helps children and young people develop skills for everyday activities, including movement, coordination and independence.
LSA (Learning Support Assistant)
A member of staff who supports pupils with their learning and wellbeing under the direction of the class teacher.
PSA (Pastoral Support Assistant)
A member of staff who supports pupils with their emotional wellbeing, behaviour and social development.
DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead)
The member of staff responsible for leading safeguarding and child protection in school.
Family Support
Support provided to families to help with communication, attendance and accessing services.
