Main purpose of the job:

To work in partnership with the Head Teacher, Senior Leadership Team and governing body to provide professional leadership and management for the school.  To use inspiring and innovative ways to ensure the school’s success and improvement by delivering, high quality education and personalized learning for all pupils. 

To support the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership team in formulating the aims and objectives of the school and ensuring an environment for learning and teaching that empowers all stakeholders to achieve their highest potential.

To support the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership team in establishing policies for achieving these aims and objectives and monitoring progress towards the achievement of these aims and objectives.

To assist the Head Teacher and Senior Leadership Team in managing staff accordingly to ensure the school’s aims and objectives are achieved.

 

 

Key duties and responsibilities

Under the direction of the head teacher, the assistant head teacher will:

  • To promote a culture where all stake holders experience a positive and enriching school life
  • To oversee and support mentors for the current ECT training programme for new teachers
  • To inspire staff to develop an aspirational view of education and develop a cohesive whole school approach to staff development
  • Alongside SLT, lead on the development of outstanding teaching across the school, through devising training and support needs for specific staff to enhance the quality of their education.
  • To be able to support staff to implement strategies which secure high standards of behaviour and attendance and to monitor behaviour effectively
  • To manage and support teachers to implement a proactive approach to learning and behaviour and ensure consistency across the school following clear structures and systems agreed in school policy and Team Teach protocols
  • To manage the logistics and quality of staff cover, ensuring minimal disruption to pupil learning and behaviour
  • To work with SLT as part of the schools multi-disciplinary approach to problem-solving behaviours and interventions
  • To work with Educational Pscyhologists, SALT, OT and other professionals to ensure best outcomes for pupils and staff
  • To maintain a safe and calm environment by sustaining high expectations and standards of behaviour and conduct for pupils
  • Use consistent and fair approaches to managing behaviour, in line with the school’s behaviour policy
  • Sustaining the aims and objectives of the School and working with SLT to establish policies through which they will be achieved; managing staff and resources to that end; and monitoring progress towards their achievement with consultation of the Head teacher and Deputy.
  • To working to maximise students progress towards their full potential
  • To liaise with key stakeholders to support school improvement

 

 

Strategic direction and development of the school:

To work with the Governing Body, Head Teacher, school workforce and school community to contribute to development of the strategic view for the school in its community and analyse and plan for the future needs and further development of the school in a local, national and international context.

  • To work alongside SLT to develop overall aims and objectives for the school and policies for their implementation;
  • To promote a culture where all stakeholders experience a positive and enriching school life
  • To support the Head teacher and SLT in creating an ethos and provide educational vision and direction which promotes effective teaching, successful learning and achievement by pupils and sustained improvement in their spiritual, moral, cultural, emotional and physical develppemtn, and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life in line with British Values.
  • To work with the Head teacher and SLT to establish priorities and targets for ensuring that pupils achieve high standards and make progress, increasing teachers effectiveness and securing school improvement
  • To work with the Head teacher and SLT to ensure that all those involved in the school are committed to its aims, motivated to achieve them and involved in meeting short, medium and long term objectives and targets which secure the educational success of the school
  • To ensure that the organisation of the school support is family focused ethos.  To ensure that policies and practices take account of national, local and school datea, inspection and research findings
  • To work with the Head teacher and SLT to monitor, evaluate and review the effectiveness of policies, priorities and targets withinin your specified area of the school and take action if necessary
  • Take a positive and active role in developing links with parents, professionals and relevant members of the community
  • As part of SLT , make a significant contribution to the daily operations of the school, supporting colleagues and responding to events
  • To work with SLT to support he development of the whole school curriculum, monitoring its effectiveness and reporting regularly to the Head teacher
  • To contribute to the strategic plan and report this to Governors

 

Teaching and Learning:

To work with the Head Teacher, Governing Body and senior leaders to secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the school and to monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of pupils’ achievement, using benchmarks and setting targets for improvement.

  • Monitor and evaluate T & L whole school alongside SLT
  • To work alongside SLT to co-ordinate the provision of staff development focused on improving the quality of teaching across the school
  • Enjoy and have a passion for working with young people with SEND
  • Ensure that a range of appropriate communication approaches are in place and consistently used to support individual pupils
  • Lead, implement and review the actions of the students Education Health and Care Plan
  • To oversee progress of individual pupils and ensure intervention plans are in place
  • Make effective use of ICT and technologies to enhance learning and teaching and raise standards
  • Be familiar with current theory and practice relating to pupils with special needs and support staff development
  • Plan and demonstrate quality teaching and provide learning opportunities that enthuse, stimulate and challenge within a safe learning environment
  • Support behaviour management strategies ensuring they are constantly reviewed and appropriate
  • Actively engage in leading and managing classroom support staff in all aspects of preparation towards achieving the best outcomes for pupils and their learning
  • Ensure learning opportunities are differentiated, challenging and engaging
  • Positively promote inclusion and have a good understanding of providing a classroom environment where resources meet the needs of all pupils.
  • Ensure that innovative and creative approaches to learning are evident in classrooms across the school, so that pupils are engaged and motivated to learn.
  • To liaise with the Deputy Head Teacher to assist subject coordinators and phase leaders in evaluating progress of all pupils and to develop a plan for improvement of standards;
  • To ensure that the quality of education is at the centre of strategic planning and resource management;
  • To be able to take a strategic role in the development of the new and emerging technologies to enhance and extend the learning experience of pupils
  • In collaboration with the leadership team, to monitor, evaluate and review classroom practice and promote improvement strategies to ensure that underperformance is challenged at all levels and ensure effective support and intervention

 

Leading and managing people

To lead, inspire, motivate, support, challenge and develop other people in order to secure improvement:

  • To maximise the contribution of staff to improve the quality of education provided and standards achieved and ensure that effective working relationships are formed between staff and pupils;
  • To sustain effective systems for the management of staff performance, incorporating appraisal and targets for teachers (including targets relating to pupils’ achievement);
  • To carry out performance management reviews on both teaching and non-teaching staff following policies and procedures;
  • To maintain an ethos of relationship based practice across the school which values the contribution that enjoyment can make to achievement.
  • To motivate and work with others to create a shared culture and a positive climate that reflects the vision of the school
  • To lead, manage and support Phase leads effectively to ensure a purposeful learning environment for all

 

Efficient and effective deployment of people and resources

To support the Head Teacher in the deployment of people and resources efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with the school’s strategic plan and financial context:

  • To work with the Head Teacher and Governing Body to recruit staff of the highest quality available;
  • To work with SLT daily  to deploy and develop all staff effectively in order to improve the quality of education provided;
  • To ensure that appropriate risk assessments are undertaken before approving participation in any out of school activities;
  • To manage, monitor and review the range, quality, quantity and use of all available resources in order to improve the quality of education, improve pupils’ achievements, ensure efficiency and secure value for money; and
  • To ensure that staff are encouraged to attend INSET and undertake CPD activity which increases their knowledge and understanding.

 

Behaviour and Staff Development Opportunities

  • To oversee the current ECT training programme for new teachers
  • To oversee and support ECT mentors to ensure highest quality training is offered

Accountability

To be accountable for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to the Head Teacher and Governing Body:

  • To provide information and objective support to the Head Teacher and governors to enable them to meet their responsibilities for securing effective teaching and learning and improved standards of achievement and for achieving efficiency and value for money;
  • To develop an organisation in which all staff recognise that they are accountable for the success of the school;
  • To work with SLT to present a coherent and accurate account of the school’s performance in a form appropriate to a range of audiences, including parents, governors, the local community, Ofsted and others, to enable them to play their part effectively;
  • To ensure that parents and pupils are well-informed about the curriculum, attainment and progress and about the contribution that they can make to achieving the school’s targets for improvement;
  • Provide line management supervision for the school’s Phase Leads, setting performance management targets, completing mid-year and end of year behaviour reviews.
  • Report regularly to the Headteacher and Governing body pupil academic progress, including the progress of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that Pupil Premium interventions and Children Looked After support programmes are effective

 

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and staff

  • Understand and implement legislation with regard to Health and Safety, such that the school meets its statutory requirements and is a safe environment for learning, and promoting the well-being of staff and students.
  • Ensure that all aspects of KCSIE 2025and working together guidance are clearly implemented and monitored
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all staff and students and their wellbeing
  • Operating within a culture of listening to children and taking account of their wishes and feelings, both in individual decisions and the development of services

 

Strengthening Community

  • To enable a school culture and curriculum which takes account of the richness and diversity of the school’s community;
  • To work in partnership with other agencies in providing for academic, spiritual, moral, social, emotional and cultural well-being of pupils and their families;
  • To seek opportunities to invite parents and carers, members of the community, business or other organisations into the school to enhance and enrich the school and its value to the wider community;
  • To be able to contribute to the development of the education system by, for example, sharing effective practice, working in partnership with other schools and promoting innovative initiatives through visits to other schools and sharing practice;
  • To co-operate and work with relevant agencies such as health to support pupils and parents for example SALT and Physio
  • To support the Head Teacher in ensuring that the school offers appropriate extended services
